Hey, creative kids! Are you ready for a fun and magical craft project? Today, we’re going to make our very own felted dragon! Dragons are awesome mythical creatures, and you can create one that looks just the way you want. Let’s get started!
What You’ll Need:
- Pipe cleaners (for the wire frame)
- Wool roving (different colours for felting)
- Felting needles
- Foam pad or felting mat
- Scissors
- Small beads (for the eyes)
- Craft glue
Step 1: Make the Wire Frame with Pipe Cleaners
First, we need to create the skeleton of our dragon using pipe cleaners. Pipe cleaners are bendy and perfect for this step. Here’s how to do it:
1. Body and Tail: Take a long pipe cleaner and bend it into a U-shape. This will be the body and tail of your dragon. Twist the ends together to make it sturdy.
2. Head and Neck: Use another pipe cleaner to create the head and neck. Twist one end around the top of the body pipe cleaner to attach it.
3. Legs: Cut four shorter pieces of pipe cleaner for the legs. Attach them to the body by twisting them around the middle section.
4. Wings (Optional): If you want your dragon to have wings, twist two more pipe cleaners into wing shapes and attach them to the back of the body.
Your pipe cleaner frame should now look like a dragon shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect because we’ll be covering it with wool!
Step 2: Add the Wool Roving
Now it’s time to make your dragon come to life with colorful wool roving. Wool roving is soft, fluffy wool that’s perfect for felting.
1. Cover the Frame: Take small pieces of wool roving and wrap them around the pipe cleaner frame. Start with the body and work your way to the legs, head, and tail. Use different colors for different parts if you like.
2. Felting: Using your felting needle, poke the wool repeatedly into the foam pad. This helps the wool fibers stick together and stay on the frame. Be careful with the needle, as it’s sharp!
3. Shape the Body: As you felt, shape the wool with your hands to make the dragon’s body rounder and the legs more defined. Add more wool and keep felting until you’re happy with how it looks.
Step 3: Details and Decoration
Your dragon is almost done! Now let’s add some details to make it even more special.
1. Eyes: Use small beads for the eyes. You can glue them onto the head or poke them into the wool using the felting needle.
2. Horns and Spikes: Use small pieces of wool to create horns, spikes, or other cool features for your dragon. Felt them into place by poking with the needle.
3. Wings (Optional): If you added wings, felt some wool around them to make them look more realistic.
Step 4: Final Touches
Take a good look at your dragon. Does it need any more wool in certain spots? Are the legs and tail the right shape? Make any final adjustments and add any extra details you want.
Step 5: Show Off Your Dragon!
You did it! You’ve made your very own felted dragon. Now, give it a name and show it off to your friends and family. You can even make more dragons in different colors and sizes.
Crafting is all about having fun and using your imagination. Enjoy your new dragon friend and keep creating!

Hope you had a blast making your felted dragon. Stay tuned for more fun crafts and projects. Happy crafting! 🐉✨
